The Kings Speech.

The UK Film Council invested £1 million of public funds into The King’s Speech through its now defunct Premiere Fund and is believed to have a net profit position as high as 34% in the film which was produced by See-Saw Films and Bedlam Productions. In the Oscars (for which it had 12 nominations), The King’s Speech had already made over $235 million at the box-office worldwide and a gross as much as $400 million when its roll-out was complete. Even with the film world’s usually tricky accounting on recoupment, it was a huge return on a film that cost $15m to make.

The USA dominates the Box Office, however, the UK has managed to produce big hits; both independently and with US financing. The top film released in 2011 was US funded and distributed by Warner Brothers. 'Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows: Part 2' received a Box Office gross of £73.09 million. This is a phenomenal success for a US funded UK film. Coming in Second was 'The King's Speech' which was an independent UK film distributed by Momentum. Surprisingly, this reeled in a Box Office gross of £45.68 million with 'The Inbetweeners' (another independent UK film) in a close third producing a Box Office gross of £45.03 million. The Extraordinary success of the two independently produced films shows that some UK films do very well, however rare this may be. Both Films also had very different target audiences. 'The King's Speech' was aimed at the 45+ age group which has seen a considerable increase in cinema attendance. The domination of cinema viewings at the time of the release helped the film soar and become a huge success. 'The Inbetweeners' was aimed at a much younger audience who, most likely, would have seen the television series. The younger age groups or teenagers also made up a large proportion of cinema viewings and therefor the film was also very popular as it appealed to a big group. Both Films were also low in cost to produced,as they were independently funded, which made the profit bigger.

The USA is well known for its distributors. The five main distributors are: Walt Disney, Warner Brothers, 20th Century Fox, Universal and Paramount. Because of this, it is much harder for independent and small distributors to compete with big Hollywood producers.
