MY FINAL PRODUCTION.
- To conclude,I feel my media production does follow the conventions set by other media products of the Horror Genre. This is because my protagonist, location, costume and shots all fit the guids set by the Horror genre. My piece is also easily recognisable as being in this genre meaning it is similar to others.
- Looking back at my preliminary piece i can see clear characteristics that differ between that and my final media product. Furthermore, i feel it is clear that the standard of work has hugely improved. This is mainly due to a lack of experience as only two out of the group had previously done media at GCSE and so had had little practise. The software we used was also basic so the editing quality was limited.
- Comparing our preliminary to our final piece highlights our increased experience as we identified many different editing and camera skills and used them effectively to create tension and susprense. This is something we were unable to do in our preliminary as we were limited to the 180° rule, shot reverse shot and an over the shoulder shot. Whilst these are respectible skills, our final production shows that we are aware of many other shot types and editing skills. Some of these featured were panning shots, Static transitions and a dolly zoom. This shows we had a greater understanding that when we created our preliminary and emphasises our improvements.
- The overall finish of our final production, i personally feel, is much higher than that of our preliminary. It is sharper and flows better keeping the shots continuous. In the preliminary we had to create a Match on action. We did this by showing a hand opening a door and then cutting to show the person walking through the door. We managed to create this shot well and the editing kept the shots continuous. However, the overall finish of our preliminary was basic and showed little about of knowledge of transitions and effects. We were able to use this knowledge in our final piece as we used Static transitions and matching noices to make the protagonist look ghostly. We also used a slow pace creating an eerie atmosphere. We also faded the shots in and out to make them flow smoothly. The finish was much more professional and helped create a mysterious effect for the audience, which we weren't able to do in our preliminary.
- The story line of our final production was also much more imaginative compared to our preliminary. Our first piece followed a man opening a door (match on action) followed by him walking across a room (180° rule) followed by a shot, reverse, shot sequence of a shot conversation. We also used over the shoulder shots during the converstaion which we decided to add ourselves that was not part of the instructed shots. This was a basic storyline and has a simple narrative that is easy to follow. Our final media product, however, is more sophisticated. This is because the narrative isn't clear and the viewer is forced to imagine what the rest of the plot would be about. The main character also appears to both be there and not be there which could confuse an audience and make each person think something differently. This shows a clear increase in narrative ideas product quality which we were able to reach with our final production.
- We also managed to increase the quality of sound for out final piece. In the preliminary we used some basic diegetic speech. We then slowed this down as the slow motion would create an emotional effect and create sympathy for the protagonists. This was also low quality as it was recorded on the camera whilst the shots were filmed an then uploaded straight to IMovie. Howere, our final piece featured no diegetic or ambient sounds and was all created through garage band and taken from Final Cut. This gave the sound in our final production a higher quality finish as it was of a higher quality when uploaded. This was because of the technology we used in our post production compared to that that we had used whilst doing our preliminary. This shows we were more aware about what music would create a lasting effect on our audience and fit the genre we were trying to fit.
